The Magic of Maize
Maize is the most significant crop in Malawi, 3.5 million metrics tons - approximately 60% of the country's cultivated land - is produced each year.
The staple food of Malawi, "nsima," is a thick porridge made from maize flour and is the central part of the Malawian diet with rich cultural significance. It is also a critical part of the feed for livestock in the country.
So it is no surprise that the crop is the main source of income for farmers and provides vital employment in local communities.
Keeping it Simple
While maize is the dominant crop in the country, once the cobbs are harvested, the majority of the remaining plant (biomass) is left to decay in fields. This equates to millions of metric tons of biomass emitting carbon into the atmosphere.
This is the beauty of our approach! We take this unused biomass and create biochar. Not only is biochar a valuable commodity - trading at $150+ metric ton - it also is a durable carbon capture vehicle that qualifies for valuable carbon credits.
